Sony PlayStation 3 hard drives must use the FAT32 file format. Most computers running newer editions of Windows use the newer NTFS file system. FAT32 drives have a maximum file size of 4GB, making it necessary to split large files. If you want to replace the hard drive in your PS3 to hold more game data or media files, including videos and movies, you can purchase a separate SATA hard drive to replace the internal one in the system, which you must first format using the FAT32 file system.
