Tutorial on How to Fix RLOD on the PS3

The PlayStation3 possesses an indicator light on the front that can either flash yellow or red, depending on the circumstance and severity of a problem. One of the common scenarios is that the light is red, often indicating an overheating problem. In rare cases, this is an internal break in the solder joints, requiring a trip to Sony for repair. However, most of the time the PS3 simply needs room to breathe.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the unit from the front panel. Allow the console to cool for 30 minutes at minimum, or until it feels cool to the touch.

    • 2

Remove the device from any enclosed cabinet space. You may choose to leave it outside of the space if the problem repeats under heavy use.

    • 3

Wipe the vents free of dust with the damp rag. Blow away any residual vent blockages with short bursts of compressed air. Be sure to hold the can upright at all times to prevent it from spraying moisture into the console.

    • 4

Turn the console back on, ensuring four inches of clearance around all sides of the device at minimum. Monitor the console for indications that air is flowing through the console, and that no warning lights are flashing on the front panel.
