How to Hook Up a Battery-Powered Controller to a PS3

Sony PlayStation 3 game controllers operate using Bluetooth technology, eliminating the need for wires or wireless dongles to connect to the system and include a battery pack. To save money or if you have a preference for a different type of controller, you can purchase an aftermarket remote. They're available in wired, wireless and Bluetooth models. A wireless or Bluetooth remote needs to have batteries or a battery pack to communicate with the PlayStation 3.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the batteries or battery pack into the controller, typically by removing the cover on the back of the remote.

    • 2

Plug one end of a USB cable into the controller and the other end into an open USB port on the PS3 to charge the batteries. Most manufacturers recommend charging the controller the first time around for at least 12 hours to get the maximum battery life.

    • 3

Unplug the USB cable. If the remote operates on Bluetooth technology, turn the system on and press the PlayStation button, located in the middle of the controller, to sync it with the system. If it is wireless, plug the wireless dongle into an open USB port, then turn the PlayStation on. The system will automatically detect the controller.
