How to Create a Media Server for PS3

The PlayStation 3 firmware update 1.8 introduced support to create a media server with other Digital Living Network Alliance devices. Connect your PlayStation 3 to a computer functioning as a media server by using a wired or wireless Internet connection. After setting your computer as a media server, your PlayStation 3 device can access images, music and video to view and play on your system. The computer acts as a server while the PS3 functions as the client on the network.

Instructions

  1. Set Up the Server

    • 1

Open Windows Media Player on the computer acting as a media server.

    • 2

Click "Library," then select "Media Sharing." Check the option next to "Share Media."

    • 3

Select the boxes next to the devices with which you want to share the media. In this case, the PlayStation 3, then choose "Allow" to give the device permission to access the media server, then click "OK."

    • 4

Scroll to the type of media you want to play on the PlayStation 3 from photo, music or video from the main menu, then select the file to play.
