How to Hook up a PS3 to a Verizon Broadband Device

Like most video gaming consoles of today, the PlayStation 3 features online connectivity via the PlayStation Network for games, Web browsing and other functions. Users of Verizon's broadband Internet service can take advantage of the PS3's features by connecting their gaming console to their broadband device. The PS3 also features Wi-Fi connectivity for those who want to connect their PS3 to the Internet via their wireless home network. Connecting the PS3 to a wired or wireless network is a relatively straightforward procedure that takes less than 20 minutes to complete, in most cases.

  1. Connecting to a Verizon Wired Home Network

      Insert a RJ-45 Ethernet cable into the ethernet port at the rear of the PS3. Insert the other end of the cable into one of the four Local Area Network (LAN) ports at the back of the wired router. You can also connect the ethernet cable directly into the port at the back of the broadband modem, if you so choose.

      Navigate to "Settings" using the PS3's directional pad, and then press "X" on the controller to select "Network Settings." Choose "Internet Connection Settings." A prompt will appear stating that you will be momentarily disconnected from the Internet. Select "Yes" to proceed.

      Select "Wired Connection, and then press the "X" button. Select "Easy" at the "Network Configuration" screen. The PS3 will automatically scan and configure most of your network settings. To enter settings for PPPoE, finish the configuration and return to the "Network Configuration" screen. Select "Custom" and navigate to "IP Address Setting." Select "PPPoE" and enter the username and password supplied by Verizon. Save your settings when finished.

      Test your connection by selecting "Test Connection." Information about the network will be displayed when the PS3 successfully connects to the Internet.

    Connecting to a Verizon Wireless Home Network

      Locate your router's SSID, encryption key and encryption type. When using the router's default settings, this information can be found on the sticker at the back of the router.

      Navigate to "Settings" using the PS3's directional pad, and then press "X" on the controller to select "Network Settings." Choose "Internet Connection Settings." A prompt will appear stating that you will be momentarily disconnected from the Internet. Select "Yes" to proceed.

      Select "Wireless Connection" and press the "X" button. Select "Easy," and then select "Wireless." Choose "Scan" to bring up a list of available access points within range of the PS3. Select the router's SSID, and then press the "X" button.

      Select the type of security your router uses (i.e., "Open," "WEP" or "WPA") and enter the encryption key. Save your settings and select "Test Connection." Information about the network will be displayed when the PS3 successfully connects to the Internet.
