How to Save Directly to the PS3

The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) is equipped with an internal Hard Disk Drive (HDD). Thanks to this HDD feature, you have the ability to use your PS3 for more than just playing video games. For example, not only can you use the PS3 to listen to music and view digital photos, you can also save music and photo files directly to your PS3's HDD. This essentially allows you to turn your PS3 into a digital file storage device.

Instructions

  1. Save Music or Photos from a USB Stick Onto the PS3

      Save the music or photo files you would like to transfer to the PS3 onto a USB memory stick. The following file formats are compatible with the PS3: .wav, .atrac, .mp3, .mp4, .aac, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .tiff and .bmp.

      Turn on the PS3. Turn on the TV the PS3 is connected to. Plug the USB stick into an USB slot on the PS3 console.

      Use the arrow buttons on the controller to highlight the "Music" icon in the XMB menu if the USB stick contains music files, or the "Photo" icon if picture files are saved on the USB stick. The "USB Device" icon will appear as an option in the selected submenu. Highlight the icon.

      Press the "Triangle" button on the PS3 controller. Select "Display All."

      Navigate to the music or photo file you want to save to the PS3. Press the "Triangle" button on the controller to open the option menu. Select "Copy."

    Save Music or Photos From a CD Onto the PS3

      Save the music or photo files you would like to transfer to the PS3 onto a CD.

      Turn on the PS3. Turn on the TV the PS3 is connected to. Insert the CD containing the files you want to transfer into the PS3's CD slot.

      Use the arrow buttons on the controller to highlight the "Music" icon in the XMB menu if the CD contains audio, or to the "Photo" icon if picture files are saved on the CD. The "Audio CD" or "Data Disc" icon will appear as an option in the selected submenu. Highlight the icon.

      Press the "Triangle" button on the PS3 controller to bring up the options menu.

      Select "Display All" if prompted, and navigate to the file you want to copy. Select "Import" or "Copy" to save a copy of the file to the PS3 hard drive.
