Download the PlayStation 3 firmware update file. Save the file to your desktop.
Connect an external USB drive to your computer. Open the drive and create a new folder (via the menu bar) named "PS3." Open this folder, and create a new folder inside of it named "UPDATE."
Copy the downloaded firmware file to the "UPDATE" folder. Once copied, remove the drive from your computer and connect it to an open USB port on the PlayStation 3.
Press and hold the "PS" button on the PS3 controller, with the console powered off. The system will turn on, then power off. Repeat this step and you will hear two beeps.
Connect the PS3 controller to the PS3 using the included cable. Press the "PS" button.
Select "System Update" to begin restoring the PlayStation 3 to the official firmware. Follow any on-screen prompts, if applicable. Once restored, the console will reboot.
