How to Fix a PS3 Game Not Spinning When Inserted

Once a disc is inserted into the PlayStation 3, or PS3, the console will begin to read it. As the console reads the content of the disc, the disc spins quickly in the optical drive. If it doesn't spin, the console can't read or load the content. This problem is often the result of a damaged or incompatible game disc. It can also be the result of faulty game data or damaged files on the hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the disc with a lint-free cloth. Move the cloth in a straight line from the innermost circle to the outside edges.

    • 2

Check the game disc, and verify that it is compatible with the PS3 console. PS3 models CECHA01, CECHB01 and CECH01 are compatible with PS2 titles. Look on the bottom of the unit for the model number. Enter the game title into the corresponding field on the PlayStation website, and verify that it is compatible.

    • 3

Insert another PS3 game or disc into the console. If the new game disc spins, the problem could be the game data, so proceed to Step 4. If it does not, insert the game disc into another PS3 console. If it works in another console, skip to Step 5.

    • 4

Remove the game disc from the PS3 console. Turn on the console and the television. Select "Game," and then "Game Data Utility" from the menu. Find the game data related to the game disc you're trying to play, and press the triangle button on the controller to delete it.

    • 5

Select "Settings" from the PS3 home screen. Choose "System Settings," and then "Restore Default Settings." Then select "System Settings." The PS3 will then restore itself. Try the disc again after restoration is complete.

    • 6

Turn off the PS3. Hold down the "Power" button until the system beeps three times and the power light is red. Release the "Power" button. Then hold down the "Power" button again until you hear two beeps, then a quick double beep. Release the "Power" button. Connect the controller to the console using a USB cable, when prompted. Select "Restore File System." After the file system is restored, insert the disc and try it again.
