Choosing the Right Headset
Some wired headsets use PC-style microphone jacks to connect to their intended system. This plug is the same size and shape as a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Headsets that use this type of connector will not work with the PlayStation 3. The PS3 does not feature any 3.5mm ports. It uses USB to connect to peripherals such as headsets. Make sure your wired headset uses USB to connect or it will not be compatible with your PlayStation 3.
Activating the Headset
Plug the wired headset into any of the available USB ports on your PlayStation 3. Navigate to the "Settings" section of the PS3 XMB menu. Scroll down to "Accessory Settings" and open this part of the "Settings" menu. Scroll down to "Audio Device Settings" and open the submenu. Highlight the "Input Device" and press "X" until the text displays "USB Audio Device." Highlight "OK" and press "X" to confirm your selection.
Using the Headset in Voice Chat
This headset is used to communicate verbally with other PS3 users. One way that this is used is during voice chat sessions. Navigate to the "Friends" section of the XMB and select "Start New Chat." Select "Voice/Video Chat" and then invite any friend that is currently online to chat with you. Compose a brief message and send it. When the friend responds to the invitation, his image will appear on the screen and you will be able to use the wired headset to speak with him.
Using the Headset In-Game
You can also use the wired headset to communicate with other players within an online game. The game handles this automatically once you join an online match. With your headset activated, simply begin speaking when in the game lobby or in the match itself. Depending on the specific game being played, you may only be heard by the other players on your team. All players may only be able to hear your voice when in the game lobby prior to the start of or directly after a match.
