Things You'll Need
Instructions
Press and hold the "PS" button on the PS3 controller to turn on the system. Wait a few seconds for the PS3 to power on and then look in the top right-hand corner to see your network connection status. When you are connected to the PlayStation Network, your user ID will appear in this corner. If this is the first time you've turned on the PS3 or if you haven't configured your Internet connection, proceed to Step 2. Otherwise, skip ahead to Step 3.
Make sure your high-speed modem and wireless router are both turned on and working. Check your Internet connection and Wi-Fi connection with your computer first to verify this. Then use the PS3 controller to navigate through the menu to Settings and then scroll down to select Network Settings. Choose Internet Connection Settings and then "Yes" to begin the network setup wizard. Choose Easy, Wireless and Scan to have the PS3 look for your network automatically. Enter the network key if prompted and then save your settings.
Use the controller to select Network and then scroll down to Sign In. The first time you try to access the network you will be asked to sign up. Follow the onscreen prompts to register an account, or enter your user name and password if you already have one. By default, the PS3 remembers your account information and stores it for the next time you turn the system on.
Ask your friend for his PS3 user name or use the search through the Network menu to find him. When you have added contacts, you will see a new Friends Online option under the Network heading. You can select a friend from this list to chat, and your PS3 will connect to his over your wireless network. To play a game against your friend you'll need a bit of coordination. You must both have the same game and be logged onto the PlayStation network simultaneously. Use the online options within the specific game to connect to your friend.
