Download the PS3 Custom Theme Toolbox zip file at the PS3 Guides website. (See Resources). Extract the file and save it to your PC.
Open the "Step 1_Create" folder and select the "XMB" icon you would like to customize.
Open the image you have chosen in an image editing program such as Paint or Photoshop. Make the edits you want and add photos or other images.
Save your edited image as a "PNG" file into the "Step1_Create" folder.
Change as many icons as you would like using the same steps.
Customize backgrounds by opening your "Step 1_Create" folder and choosing a background to edit.
Open the background in your image editing program and make the changes you want.
Save the background image as a "JPG" file in the "Step 1_Create" folder.
Open your "Step 1_Create" folder and size it to take up half your screen. Open the "Step 2_Assemble" file and place it on the other half of your screen.
Drag your "PS3Theme_TEMPLATE.xml" file from the "Step 1_Create" folder and place it into the "pstcompiler.exe" program in the "Step 2_Assemble" folder.
Press "Enter" when a new window pops up and "Done" appears.
Place the USB drive into your computer and go to your "Step 1_Create" folder. Copy the "PS3Theme_TEMPLATE.p3t" file to the USB drive, into a "THEME" folder you create for this purpose.
Remove the USB drive and place it into the PS3 USB port. Turn the PS3 on and go to "Settings," "Theme Settings" and "Theme."
Click on "Install" to install your new theme. After it installs, your new theme will appear in your "Theme List."
