How to Create Cloud Strife in 3D Dot Game Heroes

"3D Dot Heroes" is a PlayStation 3 game that pays homage to older eight-bit games with its unique 3-D pixel style. One of the most attractive features of the game is the ability for players to create their own models for the main character through the use of the editor. While mastering the pixel editor will require time, artistic skill and creativity, players can quickly learn many of the technical aspects of the editor to help them in their journey. Before long, any player should be able to create models such as a Cloud Strife, Donkey Kong or Link model.

Instructions

    • 1

Search the Internet for a pixelated image of the character you wish to recreate. If you cannot find a pixelated image, a picture will suffice. Pixelated images are optimal because the locations and colors of the pixels can be directly transferred into the game.

    • 2

Create a Standing Model to use as the baseline for all six frames of your character. Select "Stand" and click "Edit Pose."

    • 3

Add pixels to the central box to make the basic image of your character. Make certain that you orient the character so its front is facing the yellow arrow at the bottom of the screen.

    • 4

Create the feet of the character at the bottom of the pixel box and work your way upward. It is typically best to start at the bottom because it prevents you from making characters that are too tall or too short.

    • 5

Build the body parts upward along the body. After the feet, build the legs, torso, arms and head. Use white for Cloud's skin, blue or black for his clothing and yellow for his hair. Add a belt of a different color than his clothes to contrast his outfit.

    • 6

Flesh out your character by expanding the dimensions of the character forward and backward. Models tend to be adequately wide and tall but frequently lack depth. Add depth to your character's chest, increase the thickness of the head and lengthen the feet. Cloud Strife's thickest points are his hair and his chest, so be certain to add plenty of depth.

    • 7

Copy the "Standing" pose for the "Walk 1" pose. Open the "Walk 1" pose and edit it by cutting and pasting all of the pixels on one leg a single pixel forward. Do the same for the other leg, but in the opposite direction.

    • 8

Copy the "Standing" pose for the "Walk 2" pose and follow the same process for the Walk 1 pose. For the Walk 2 pose, invert the position of the feet. If the right leg was forward in Walk 1, make it the back leg in Walk 2.

    • 9

Copy the "Standing" pose for the "Hurray" pose. Move all of the pixels up one space to emulate jumping. Redraw the arms in an upward position to indicate excitement.

    • 10

Copy the "Standing" pose for "Attack 1." Redraw the character's left arm forward in a striking position. You may redraw the legs to emulate an aggressive fighting pose, if desired.

    • 11

Copy the "Attack 1" pose for the "Attack 2" pose. Redraw the character's right arm forward to emulate an attack pose.
