How to Hook a PlayStation 3 to Your Home Network

Whether you've just upgraded to wireless Internet, or you want to hook up your PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game console to your existing home network, the PS3's software makes it easy to set up an Internet connection. This process requires no special equipment, but you should position your console as close to the wireless router as possible to establish a strong connection. A strong connection will prevent any potential dropped online gaming sessions and direct downloads.

  Turn on your wireless modem and make sure it is working properly. Position the video game console as close to the modem as possible.

  Turn on your console and wait for the software to load. Log onto your user account to access your account settings.

  Open the "Settings" tab. Use the directional pad to scroll to the bottom of this settings tab until it highlights "Network Settings."

  Open the "Network Settings" menu and scroll down to "Internet Connection Settings." Select "Yes" to confirm that you want to continue with the process.

  Select "Easy" from the setup options, then choose "Wireless Connection." Choose to scan for detectable networks and wait for the scan to complete.

  Select your home network from the list of available networks. This will typically be the option with the highest strength percentage.

  Refer to your modem or instruction manual to locate your SSID and security key, if applicable. If you do not know either of these passwords, contact your Internet service provider. Once you have these two IDs, enter them into the next two screens.

  Review the connection settings and hit "X" to confirm them. Choose to run a connection test, which finalizes the connection setup.
