How to Hook Up a PS3 to a TV Using an AV Cable

The PlayStation 3, also called the PS3, has the ability to output video in up to 1080p resolution using the system's HDMI cable. If you don't own a high-definition TV, however, you must resort to analog options. For instance, a standard set must utilize the console's supplied audio/video (AV) cable's to output at the lowest resolution, 480i or 480p.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the PS3 and set the Main Power switch, on the console's back side, to "Off." Unplug the AC power cable from its wall outlet to completely cut power off from the PS3.

    • 2

Plug the AV cable's single end into the console's "AV Multi Out" plug-in on the PS3's back side.

    • 3

Plug the opposite end of the AV cable into the TV's AV RCA ports, being sure to match each of the three plug-ins to its corresponding color: yellow, white or red.

    • 4

Plug the AC power cable back into the wall outlet, flick the Main Power switch to "On" and turn on the system.

    • 5

Turn on the TV and change the input to "AV." Most TVs have an "Input" button. Press that button until "AV" appears on the screen. The PS3's picture displays on your TV.
