How to Properly Flux a PS3

Flux cored welding is a soldering process that actually already contains flux in the wire. The flux is used in the bonding process when soldering wires, such as those that are inside of the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3). If the wires become disconnected or need to be replaced, they can be soldered together and secured within the electronic device. This may be the case if your PS3 no longer works. Before starting this project, you should have some knowledge of PS3 wiring and repair. Also, you will want some prior practice in soldering and using flux on wires.

Things You'll Need

  • Work gloves
  • Face mask
  • Safety glasses
  • Flux core soldering machine
  • Flux core settings chart

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety glasses, a face mask and work gloves to protect yourself from the heat and sparks from the machine.

    • 2

Adjust the speed of the wire feed and the voltage on the flux core machine to the desired settings. Turn the knobs on the side of the machine to make these adjustments. The settings will depend on the thickness of the wire on which you are working. Use the chart that comes with the machine to make the appropriate adjustments.

    • 3

Release approximately 1 inch of flux core wire from the machine by pressing the trigger.

    • 4

Touch the tip of the wire to the connection point on the wire(s) that you want to solder on the inner part of the PS3. If you are soldering more than just a "dot," start from the farthest point of the line on which you are soldering and work toward yourself.

    • 5

Allow the connection to cool and harden. Do not move any of the soldered parts as this will ruin the connection.
