How to Make a PS3 Work With a VCR

You can use a VCR to record your PlayStation 3 game footage by connecting the PS3 to the VCR using the RCA/AV video cable. The older connection type does not support high-definition video, and the VCR tape's recording quality has less than half the resolution of broadcast television, so the recorded product will have a noticeable drop in picture quality. However, connecting the VCR and pressing record is a quick and easy way to record game content without worrying about external sounds and motions disrupting the recording.

Things You'll Need

  • VCR with RCA/AV input ports
  • PS3 AV Multi Out connector RCA/AV Cable
  • Male-to-Male RCA/AV Cable

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the AV multi-out connector with the RCA/AV plugs into the PS3's rear AV multi-out connector port.

    • 2
RCA/AV cables use a red, yellow and white color coding system.

Connect the PS3's AV multi-out connector RCA cables to the "Video In" RCA ports on the VCR. The cables are color coded to match up between devices, so insert the plugs into the same-colored slots.

    • 3

Connect one end of the male-to-male RCA/AV cable's plugs to the corresponding color ports on VCR's "Video Out" connectors.

    • 4

Connect the other end of the male-to-male RCA AV cable's plugs to the corresponding color ports on the TV set.

    • 5

Connect the power cables to the VCR and PS3.

    • 6

Plug the VCR and PS3 power cables into electrical sockets.

    • 7

Turn on the PS3 and VCR.

    • 8

Set the VCR's recording channel to the "RCA-In" option. The process for this step will vary depending on the VCR.

    • 9
Stores still carry blank VHS tapes.

Insert a recordable VHS tape into the VCR and press "Record" to start recording.
