How to Cut Out PS3 Overheating

There's nothing more frustrating than having your PlayStation 3 (PS3) system unexpectedly shutdown in the middle of a game. Overheating is one of the primary causes of unexpected PS3 shutdowns, which can corrupt data on your console and lead to longer term problems. There are a number of steps you can take to prevent your Sony console from overheating, which will help ensure you maintain a clean, healthy PS3 system.

Instructions

    • 1

Setup your PS3 in one of the two positions recommended by Sony. Situate your console either standing vertically on its left side or horizontally. Position your console in such a way that the air vents are at least four inches from any other objects, such as a wall. In addition, help prevent air vents from clogging up by not situating your console on long-pile carpets or rugs.

    • 2

Shut your PS3 down altogether when you are not expecting to use it for at least a couple of hours, such as overnight. Leave your console on standby only if you are planning on using it again within the next couple of hours. Leaving your PS3 on standby means that it is still consuming power and operating internally, which can lead to overheating.

    • 3

Allow your PS3 to rest every three to four hours of use. Stretch your legs and allow your eyes to rest also, by going for a walk and, if possible, getting outside to allow your eyes to readjust to natural light before returning to your gameplay.

Maintain clear and clear air ventilation. Wipe dust from the surfaces of your console using a non-fibrous cloth before using the hose attachment of your vacuum cleaner to suction away any excess dust and grime from the vents.
