Installing official firmware onto a Sony PlayStation 3 gives owners the full features that come with the video game system. Every time Sony updates the features of the PS3, owners must update the software to take advantage of those features. If you do not update the software because you have custom firmware installed, you will not be able to take advantage of Sony's online gaming and store, either. Re-installing official Sony firmware gives your PS3 the plethora of new features including in each Sony software update.

  Select the "Settings" main heading from the PS3 menu after powering on the PS3. Use the "X" button on the PS3 controller to select items on the menu.

  Select "System Update" from the "Settings" subheading. Select "Update via Internet" and the PS3 searches Sony servers for the most up to date software.

  Select the "Download" option after the next screen comes up with the software update and it is downloaded onto the PS3 hard drive.

  Select "Agree" from the next screen that comes up to agree to the terms and risks of the Sony software installation.

  Press the "X" button to install the "Update." The PS3 is updated to the most recent software. The PS3 reboots once during the software installation.
