Standard Video
Your first option for connecting a PlayStation 3 is the standard video cable. This component comes included with the PS3 system and iworks on any high-definition or regular television. However, this only provides the most basic visual and audio quality, even if you use a high-definition television. If you want HD on your PS3, you need an HDMI cable or Component Cable.
Standard Video Setup
Although standard video doesn't provide complex graphics, it's easy to set up. The cable consists of three connectors, which are marked with white, yellow and red. These connect to the audio and video components of your television. The other end is black and rectangular, which connects to the "AV MULTI OUT" slot labeled on the back of your PS3. Plug the cord into your PS3 and then match the colored connectors to their corresponding holes behind your TV, which are marked by the words "Video" and "L-Audio-R."
Component Video
Another option for connecting your system is the component video cable. Like the HDMI connector, this is also sold separately. Unlike its regular counterpart, the component video accessory provides high-definition picture quality and sound. However, there are differences. Component video provides HD, but if you want to connect it to a separate audio system, it requires another accessory called an optical digital cable. HDMI, on the other hand, directly connects with the TV and any additional high-definition peripherals.
Component Video Setup
The component video setup process is similar to the standard one. Like its counterpart, this cable connects to the "AV MULTI OUT" slot on your PS3. It also contains colored plugs. However, there are five instead of three. If your HD television is compatible with this, you'll see a section behind the TV labeled "Component Video In" and "Audio In" next to it. Match the colored ends with their matching plugs on the television to connect the device.
