How to Link a New PlayStation Controller to a PlayStation 3

Any new PlayStation 3 controller must be linked (more appropriately referred to as paired) to the PS3 before it will work. A controller has to be paired to a PS3 only one time, unless the controller has been used on a different PS3. Included with the PS3 is a USB cable, which is used to pair controllers. The included USB cable is intended for Sony controllers, such as the DualShock 3, Bluetooth remote and Sixaxis, and may not work with some third-party controllers.

     Turn on the PS3.

     Connect the USB cable to the controller and either of the USB ports on the front of the PS3.

     Press the "PS" button on the controller and wait for the lights to stabilize, which indicates that the controller has been paired successfully.
