Why Is My PS3 Blinking Red?

The Sony PlayStation 3 video game console performs a variety of different functions. In addition to disc-based media, the console also plays digital content directly from the hard drive as well as data streamed from the Internet. Because the console is equipped with so many individual components, an LED error code system is used to identify specific problems when errors occur.
  1. LED Status Indicators

    • Two LED lights are located on the front panel of the PlayStation 3 console. The disc drive and power status LED indicators are located directly below the power button on the right side of the console. The disc drive status indicator is blue and stays on as long as a disc is inserted in the console. The power status indicator is red and remains solid when the console is powered on and operating correctly. The power status indicator is also illuminated when the console is in a standby state.

    Power Status Indicator Blinking Red

    • The power status LED will change from solid to blinking red when the PlayStation 3 console overheats. This change is accompanied by three consecutive beeps. Leave the console off for at least 30 minutes while the unit cools down. Vacuum or remove any dust from the vents on the back and sides of the console and ensure that nothing is blocking the airflow. If the console is located in an enclosed space, move it to an open area before turning it on again. If the console overheats again, you will need to contact PlayStation Support.

Power Status Indicator Blinking Green, Yellow and Red

    • The power status LED will alternate between green and yellow, then change to blinking red, when an internal component, such as the CPU, is damaged or defective. This sequence of lights is accompanied by three rapid, consecutive beeps. This particular error is most commonly caused by extended overheating and ventilation issues. Unlike the standard blinking red light, however, this problem cannot be resolved by allowing the console to cool down. This error code is the most severe and indicates that the console will need to be repaired or replaced by PlayStation Support.

    Scheduling Console Repairs

    • The retailer where you bought the console may offer an additional warranty. Contact the individual retailer before contacting PlayStation Support. Access the PlayStation Support Service website for instructions on how to send your console away for repairs. You will need to supply PlayStation Support with proof of purchase for repairs under warranty. You must also provide them with the serial number of your console, which is located on a sticker on the back panel.
