How to Fix an Overheated PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system is a powerful piece of electronic equipment. Unfortunately, to produce all of that power the system also produces a lot of heat. While the system is fitted with a cooling fan and sufficient vents in the casing, several circumstances can arise to raise the temperature of the system beyond its normal limits. Typically, the problem is simple to identify and remedy by yourself with little interruption in operation. However, sometimes the issue can be too complex to be fixed at home and requires professional service from the technicians at Sony.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the immediate surroundings of the PlayStation 3 unit. Observe whether there are any objects blocking the fan. Also, placing the unit on the carpet or near curtains can sometimes interfere with the proper ventilation of the system. Reposition your PlayStation 3 so that the fan is in more open air.

    • 2

Look at the vents on the rear of the PlayStation 3 unit. If there is significant dust build-up, use a can of compressed air to remove the dust which may be interfering with ventilation.

    • 3

Shorten your gaming or movie session times so that you are not running the system for extensive periods of time. It is good to allow the system to cool after several hours of use.

Contact Sony for information on sending your system for repair. If the overheating is caused by issues with the cooling fan, sending your PlayStation 3 to the manufacturer is the solution of last result. Any attempted self-repair will void the warranty.
