Instructions
Unplug the PS3 console. Remove the rubber feet and the screws beneath them. Open the case to the PS3. Remove the additional eight screws to remove the secondary cover.
Lift the Blu-ray drive up from the system two inches. Turn it on its side and unplug the two cables (power and data) from the drive. Remove the screws holding it on the controller board and set the board off to the side so you can work on it.
Locate the BGA chip by first finding the largest chip on the board. The BGA chip will be right next to it, closest to the edge of the board. Use the heat gun directly on the chip using slight circular motions until the solder breaks free from the board. Slide the chip off the board using a screwdriver.
Clean the chip using heat from a soldering iron and flax. Once all of the silicon is gone, allow the chip to cool before cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and cotton. If necessary, remove the same chip from the new board. Use heated flax and rubbing alcohol to clean the new board.
Melt a ball of solder onto the bottom of the chip. Allow it to cool and clean it again with rubbing alcohol. The underside of the chip should look like it has little metal balls in each of the connectors. Line the chip up onto the board and set it in place. Apply pressure to the top of the chip holding it in place while using the heat gun to melt the solder again, locking it in place. Allow the board to cool for an hour.
Screw the new board onto the Blu-ray drive and plug in the cables, setting the drive back into place in the system. Replace the secondary cover along with the eight screws. Replace the top of the PS3 along with the screws and rubber feet holding it in place.
