Instructions
Insert a thumb drive into an open USB port on the computer. Double click "Windows Explorer." Click on the directory that corresponds with the thumb drive, which is often the E or F drive.
Click "File," and a drop-down menu will open. Scroll over "New." A side menu will open. Click "Folder" to create a new folder on the thumb drive, and type "PS3" and press the enter key. Click the "PS3" folder. Click "File," scroll over "New" and click "Folder" to create a new subfolder. Type "UPDATE" and press Enter. The folders must be labeled with all capital letters or else the PlayStation 3 will not recognize them.
Right click the firmware, and a menu will open. Click "Copy," then click on the "UPDATE" folder and click "Paste." The firmware files will be copied to the thumb drive.
Remove the thumb drive from the computer, and insert it into an open USB port on the PlayStation 3.
Press and hold the power button on the PlayStation 3 until you hear three beeps. During this time, the PlayStation will power on (first beep), reset the video input (second beep) and power off (third beep).
Press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps. Following the second beep, you will hear two quick beeps. When you hear the quick double beeps, release the power button. You will see "Connect the controller using a USB cable, and then press the PS button" displayed on the screen.
Connect a PlayStation 3 controller and press the PS button.
Scroll to "Settings." Scroll to "System Update" and Press X. Scroll to "Update via Storage Media" and press X. Scroll to "Accept" and press X. The PlayStation 3 will reboot. Once the PS3 reboots, the custom firmware will be installed.
