How to Boot a PS3 Slim to the Service Mode

To download a previous version of the PlayStation 3 Slim firmware to the console, it must be in service mode. Service mode also allows you to change other settings in the operating system. Sony didn't design service mode to be accessible by the everyday user, and accessing service mode could void your warranty. To access the service mode on the PS3 Slim, you must trick the console with a specially programmed dongle.

     Power off the PS3 Slim.

     Insert the USB PS3 jailbreak dongle into one of the console's USB ports. Jailbreak dongles are available online.

     Turn on the PS3 and turn it off once it has notified you that it has detected the connected dongle.

     Turn the PS3 back on. It will automatically go into PlayStation 3 Factory/Service Mode.
