How to Adjust the TV View on a PS3

Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) outputs video in 1080p, 1080i and 720p high definition, and in 480p and 480i standard definition. The aspect ratio for the high-definition outputs is always 16:9. In standard definition, the aspect ratio can be either 16:9 or the older 4:3 ratio. Standard-definition TV view is user-configurable, while high-definition is automatic. Adjusting the TV view can be accomplished by making some connections, and then adjusting controls.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the television to the PS3 using either the included RCA composite cable, or an optionally-purchased HDMI, or set of "Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr" component cables and a digital audio cable.

    • 2

Turn the PS3 off and then on again if you're using composite "AV Multi," which is the cable that came with the PS2 and has the red, white and yellow connectors. The PS3 TV view will be configured for a 4:3 aspect.

    • 3

Select "Settings" and then "Display Settings" and "Video Output Settings" if you're using other cables. Choose the type of video cable you are using. If you're using HDMI, choose "Automatic" on the following screen, or if you're using an optional component cable, choose "Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr."

    • 4

Choose the resolutions that the TV supports on the next screen if the screen appears. In some configurations, the screen is moot and won't appear. You can find the resolution in the television's documentation. It will be listed as 480i, 720p, 1080p and so on. Any resolution above 720p will cause the TV view to be set at 16:9 automatically and the TV view page won't appear.

    • 5

Choose the TV view if you selected a resolution lower than 720p. Choose 16:9 if your TV is an LCD or plasma and elongated, and 4:3 if your TV provides CRT technology and is box-like.
