How to Fix a Bricked PS3 with Firmware

PlayStation 3 gaming consoles run much like a computer and need firmware update installed occasionally. When a firmware update is only partially installed, it can cause a PS3 system to become "bricked" and not function properly. PS3 owners can fix a bricked PS3 console themselves to get it working again if they are able to access the main menu of the PS3 system. All PS3 firmware must be completely reinstalled for a system restore to be successful.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the button on the front of the PS3 console to turn it on.

    • 2

Select "Settings" form the main menu and go into "System Settings."

    • 3

Choose "Restore PS3 System" from the choices available. Be aware that restoring your PS3 system means that all data you have stored on the hard drive will be lost, such as trophies, files and saved games.

    • 4

Click "Yes" if you are okay with losing all of the stored information on your system and continuing on with the system restore.
