How to Format PS3 Downgrades

The PlayStation 3 is a video game console and entertainment center from Sony, released in 2006. Periodically, Sony will release firmware updates that fix bugs, patch security holes and add functionality to the console. Some firmware updates have also removed features; for instance, the PS3 initially allowed users to install Linux operating systems on the console. If you've downgraded the PS3 to regain some particular functional and wish to format the downgraded system, the process is simple --- though it will erase the entire hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Power on the PlayStation 3. Navigate to the "Settings" menu.

    • 2

Select "System Settings," select "Format Utility."

    • 3

Select "Format Hard Disk." Confirm the selection. It may take several hours to completely format the PlayStation 3. Reboot the PS3 when the process completes.
