How to Decrease Lag in PS3

Lag is a common issue with PlayStation 3 (PS3) users who are involved in online gaming. When the console lags, you are at a great disadvantage. Any opponent with a faster connection can kill or harm your player before you even know they're there. When you retaliate, your weapon or player takes several seconds to react, allowing your enemy amble time to flee the scene. You can reduce lag time in your console by following a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Upgrade to a faster connection. DSL is faster than dial-up, and broadband is faster than DSL. In addition, many companies offer different DSL and broadband packages, all of which offer a different speed. Contact your cable or Internet company to see about upgrading your Internet.

    • 2

Move your wireless router closer, or within 10 feet of your console. Routers do have limited range, placing your router closer will decrease lag.

    • 3

Connect the PS3 to the router with an Ethernet cable. Wireless connections have a tendency to be slower; wired connections are often faster.

    • 4

Shut down any computers or devices that are currently accessing the Internet. Family and friends that are accessing the same Internet connection can eat up bandwidth and slow down your connection.

    • 5

Close any programs that are currently accessing the Internet on computers that remain on. File sharing programs especially can use a substantial amount of bandwidth. Close these programs while you play on the PS3.
