Begin a new game of "DC Universe Online."
Complete the character creation process. During the process you will decide the appearance of your character along with the special abilities. For example, you will decide if your character can fly, is invulnerable or uses gadgets. The character also will be aligned with either the super heroes or super villains.
Choose your starting location. Players can choose between Metropolis and Gotham City. Both locations have specific areas available to villains and heroes. For example, heroes in Gotham City start in the Batcave while villains start in Arkham Asylum.
Defeat opponents to earn experience points. Opponents are located in major areas within the game. Approach an opponent and begin attacking with the character's special abilities and regular attacks. When the enemy is defeated the character will be rewarded with experience points. Once you have obtained a specific amount of points, the character's level will increase by one grade.
Complete the available missions to earn additional experience points. These missions advance the story line of "DC Universe Online." Speak to the non-playable characters (NPC) in various locations in Gotham City and Metropolis to begin these missions. They will require your character to complete tasks that involve helping heroes or villains, depending upon your alignment.
Continue earning experience points until your character's level increases to your required level. The amount of points needed for each level gain depends on your specific character. Review your character's status menu to understand exactly how many experience points are needed to reach the next level.
