How to Backup AVCHD From a PS3

AVCHD is an acronym for "Advanced Video Codec High Definition." The encoding format was co-developed by Sony and Panasonic for use in HD camcorders. When AVCHD footage is captured by these devices, it is stored in a series of MTS files. Although MTS files can be opened and edited in HD camcorder software, they will need to be converted in an alternate format before they can be loaded onto another device, like the PS3. While the gaming console can be used to store digital video, the system is only compatible with MP4, AVI and WMV formats. As a result, MTS files need to be converted into one of these supported formats before they can be stored on the PS3.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install video-conversion software that supports MTS as an input format and MP4, AVI and WMV as output formats.

    • 2

Launch the video conversion software. Click the "Add" command and browse for the MTS input video in the file selection window. Select the item and click the "Open" button to load the media into the program.

    • 3

Program the output format for the MTS input video. Choose from the MP4, AVI and WMV options.

    • 4

Click the "Convert." A confirmation message will appear when the PS3-supported video has been encoded.

    • 5

Plug a USB flash drive into a USB port on the computer. A dialog box will appear when the system recognizes the external storage device. Copy the PS3-supported video onto the USB flash drive. Wait until the media has completely transferred over and eject the device.

    • 6

Turn on the PS3 and plug the USB flash drive into the USB port of the gaming console.

    • 7

Access the "Videos" section on the main menu screen. A listing for the USB flash drive will display. Press the triangle button on the controller to select the connected device.

    • 8

Press the "X" button to open the USB flash drive. Select the PS3-supported video and press the triangle button.

    • 9

Select the "Copy" option and press "X" to transfer the PS3-supported video onto the hard disk of the game console. A copy of the original footage that was encoded AVCHD will now be backed up on the PS3.
