How Can I Connect My New PS3 With No HD Input on My TV?

Sony's PlayStation 3 ships with a variation on the standard AV composite cable that was used before high-definition television made component and HDMI, or High Definition Multimedia Interface cables popular. The Sony-supplied cable has the common red, white and yellow connectors at one end and a proprietary Sony "AV Multi-Out" connector at the other end. If your television doesn't have an HDMI input, or even a composite input, you can use the Sony-supplied cable to connect.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the Sony cable into the "AV Multi Out" connector on the PS3 and plug the red, white and yellow plugs on the other end into the corresponding jacks on the television. Look for a label on the TV that says "Video In" rather than "Video Out."

    • 2

Turn the PS3 off and then on again and the PS3 should automatically configure itself to the cable.

    • 3

Select the "Composite Video In" or similarly named source or input on the television by toggling the "Source" or "Input" button on the remote. Stop toggling when the PS3's image shows on the television.

    • 4

Remove any HDMI cable that may be attached to the PS3 and manually configure the PS3 if you don't see the image in the previous step. Choose "Settings" on the PlayStation and then "Display Settings" and "Video Output Settings." Select "Composite" as the "Type of Connector." Scroll through to the next screen and select the TV size. Then follow the same procedure with the "Audio Output Settings." Restart the PS3 and the image will show on the TV.
