How to Format for a PS3

The PlayStation 3 is essentially a powerful computer, used specifically for gaming and video entertainment purposes. As such, it can run into many of the same problems a typical computer can run into, such as freezing, corrupt data and disc-read errors. If you are having trouble with your PS3 or simply wish to restore the console to a like-new state, you can reformat the system's hard drive. The process will completely erase the system and should therefore be used only as a last resort. Be sure to back up any data before proceeding.

Instructions

    • 1

Power on the PlayStation 3. Press the "PlayStation" button in the center of your controller to return to the main menu (XMB) if in the middle of a game or video.

    • 2

Navigate to the "Settings" menu. Select "System Settings."

    • 3

Select "Format Utility." Select "Format Hard Disk." The process will take a few hours to complete.
