How to Downgrade a PS3 From a CFW

Downgrading a Sony PS3 that has custom firmware (CFW) installed as its operating system is a process that brings the PS3 back to its factory default settings and features. Custom firmware is much like regular firmware for the PS3. Its main difference is that you can run programs on the PS3 that you would not be able to do using the regular firmware. The problem CFW does have is that going online through Sony's PlayStation Network is restricted as the PS3 needs to have the most recent Sony firmware installed on it for that to work.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the power button on the front of the PS3 and press the power button on one of the PS3 controllers to activate it.

    • 2

Select the "Settings" option from the PS3 menu and "System Update" from the next sub-heading.

    • 3

Select "Update via Internet" and the PS3 searches for Sony's official firmware. This downgrades and removes the PS3 CFW.

    • 4

Select the "Update" to download it. Select the "Install" option once the download is finished and Sony's user agreement comes up.

    • 5

Select "Accept" for the agreement of the firmware and the firmware is installed on the PS3. Do not touch the PS3 controller or the PS3 itself during the firmware upgrade.

    • 6

Select the "System Settings" in the PS3 Settings menu when the PS3 turns back on after the upgrade is complete. Select the "System Information" and make sure it does not say "CFW" after the firmware version. The procedure is now complete.
