How to Connect a PS3 Through a VCR to a TV

Sony's PlayStation 3 features multiple ways to connect to a television. Rear video-out connectors on the PS3 provide an HDMI out port and a proprietary jack called an AV Multi Out connector. There is also an optical Digital Out connection for audio in some high-definition environments. The AV Multi Out connector passes a standard-definition signal to composite AV jacks -- the red, white and yellow ones -- and that cable is included with the PS3.

Things You'll Need

  • AV composite cable with red, white and yellow plugs at each end
  • Sony-supplied AV composite cable with red, white and yellow plugs at one end

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the video cassette recorder to the television by connecting the optional AV composite cable with red, white and yellow plugs at each end. Plug the cable into the red, white and yellow "Video In" jacks on the television and "Video Out" jacks on the VCR. The plug sockets should be color-coded to match the cable plugs. If not, follow the convention of using the yellow cable plug for video, the red plug for right-channel audio and the white plug for the left-channel audio.

Plug the Sony-supplied AV cable into the "AV Multi Out" connector on the PS3 and then plug the red, white and yellow plugs at the other end into the VCR's red, white and yellow "Video In" jacks. Make sure to follow the same convention for the yellow, red and white plugs, as described in Step 1.

    • 3

Select "Settings" on the PS3 and then "Display Settings" and "Video Output Settings." Choose "Composite" as the "Type of Connector." Do the same in the "Audio Output Settings." Make any TV size settings on the following screen. Then restart the PS3. The signal will be passed through the VCR to the TV.
