How to Diagnose My PS3 Problem

Sony's PlayStation 3, or PS3, video game console features a disc drive that's compatible with Blu-ray and DVD discs. The device also has networking functions, and can be connected to the Internet with an Ethernet cable, or through a built-in Wi-Fi radio. External drive functionality, where you can attach flash drives and other storage media is also included. Problems with the PS3 can be related to some of these areas, or there could be issues with the picture and sound. Fortunately, these kind of problems can be diagnosed relatively easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Toggle the video input on the television so that it matches the cables being used by the PS3, if there's no image. Press the input or source button repeatedly until the image shows up. If there is no sound, check if the PS3's audio outputs settings match the cable. The PS3 has a separate audio setup area from video. It's at "Settings," then "Sound Settings" and then "Audio Output Settings."

Remove any external USB hub if the PS3 doesn't recognize a USB flash memory drive, often called a USB mass storage device. The hub can reduce the power distributed to the drive. Plug the drive straight in to diagnose if there's a problem with it. If it works directly, the problem is with the hub.

Look for error messages during the wireless connection test to diagnose potential Wi-Fi issues. "DNS Error 80710102" means an error occurred communicating with the router. Check that the router settings match the PS3. For example, if the router uses a protocol called PPPoE, you may need to add that to the PS3's "Network Settings" in the "Settings" area.
