PS3 Problems: The Fan Will Not Work

Like most other large electronic devices, the PlayStation 3 can become very hot during long hours of operation. To help keep the system cool, there is an internal fan on the back of the console used to cool down the internal components. This fan is crucial to the operation of the PS3. If your fan is not working, there a few things you can troubleshoot to fix it, but if it is broken you will have to send it in for repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the console by shutting it down and setting the power switch on the back of the console to the "Off" position.

    • 2

Remove the console from any cabinet or entertainment stand that it may be placed on. As a general rule, the PS3 should always be kept at least four inches away from any wall surface on either side to allow for proper airflow and should not be kept on carpet.

    • 3

Check the vents on the rear of the console for excessive dust buildup. If the vents are clogged, clean them by using the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

    • 4

Let the console cool down for 30 minutes before attempting to turn it back on again. With the console still out in the open, power it back on to see whether the fan starts spinning again.

    • 5

Contact Sony Support to get your console serviced. If the fan is broken, it will need to be replaced by a Sony technician to get the console back into working condition.
