Instructions
Install your PlayStation 3 so that it is at least four inches away from any wall or other vertical surface. The vents must be given adequate space to operate. Avoid placing the console in confined spaces; again, this could affect the vents.
Keep the PS3 on a smooth surface and avoid placing it on a carpet or other surface with long fibers that could interfere with the unit's vents.
Clean the vents using a low-power vacuum cleaner from time to time to ensure that dust is not accumulating in the slots. Use a dry, soft cloth to clean the console itself. Make sure that the power cord is unplugged from the back of the machine when cleaning.
Switch off your PlayStation 3 properly by pressing and holding the "Home" button on the controller to bring up the shutdown options menu. Alternatively, press the power switch on the front tray of the console and hold it until you hear a beep. Do not pull the cord out of the back of the machine to switch off the console; this could corrupt the hard drive.
Do not switch off your PlayStation 3 while it is saving data to its hard drive, because this could corrupt the hard drive. A symbol usually will appear in the bottom right-hand corner to indicate it is saving. Exactly what the symbol looks like depends on the game. When you first boot up a particular title, the on-screen instructions will describe the icon's appearance.
Check your power cord from time to time to make sure that it is plugged in fully. If the cable is damaged, replace it immediately with one manufactured by Sony.
