How to Network a PS3 to a Media Server

Your PlayStation 3 is more than a game console -- it also supports viewing photographs and watching videos and movies. While you can use the PlayStation 3's internal hard drive to store files, space fills up fast. An external hard drive is another viable option if you can afford it. If not, you may consider networking your PlayStation 3 to your personal computer through a wired or wireless connection to access content without spending additional money.

Instructions

  1. Enable Media Server

    • 1

Click "Start," then select "Control Panel." Choose "Networking and Sharing Center."

    • 2

Click "Change Advanced Sharing Settings" and change Network Discovery to "On" and File &Printer Sharing to "On."

    • 3

Click "Choose Media Sharing Options" at the bottom of the window.

    • 4

Select "All Networks" from the drop-down menu to view devices on the network. Your PlayStation 3 should be turned on during this step so that your computer can find the PS3. Click "Allowed" to grant permission to the device. Your PS3 can see any files you choose to share through your media player.

    PlayStation 3 Setup

    • 5

Click "Network Settings," then choose "Settings."

    • 6

      Enable "Media Server Connection."

    • 7

Return to the main menu and under photo, music or video select "Search for Media Servers." Your PlayStation 3 will detect your computer's allowing access to shared music, photos and videos.
