How to Connect a Seagate to a PS3 After a Format

The Sony PlayStation 3 game console includes a hard drive for games, music, video and other storage. Over time you may find the original hard drive fills up with media and that you need to replace it with a larger one. Seagate manufactures hard drives that are suitable for PS3s. Sometimes the existing or replacement hard drive file system becomes corrupted and you need to reformat the drive and replace it. In any case, connecting a Seagate to a PS3 after a format is something you can do.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the power button to turn the PS3 off and then unplug the power cord. Disconnect any other cables. Turn the PS3 over and lay it on the soft cloth on the PS3's back.

    • 2

Open the screw cover by pulling on it and rotating it. You'll find the screw cover on the edge of the back above the "P" in the "PS3" logo. Remove the screw with a screwdriver and then slide the hard drive bay cover off to the side. Remove the existing hard disk by pulling the handle up and pulling the drive out of the case.

Remove the four screws that hold the hard disk in its frame and discard the disk. Place the replacement, formatted Seagate into the frame and attach it with the four screws. Replace the drive by following the second step in reverse. The drive will connect and engage as you push it into the bay.

Re-install the system software on the newly formatted drive by turning on the PS3 and inserting the disc containing the system software into the DVD drive. Follow the prompts.
