How to Connect Your PS3 to an Old TV

You can connect Sony's PlayStation 3 to an older TV --- it just won't display at the same high-quality resolution as a newer TV is capable of providing. The PS3 has multiple connectors that can be purchased in addition to the unit's AV component cable, so it's likely you will find a solution that works.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the available jacks on the back of the television. You can use the supplied AV cable with red, white and yellow plugs to connect a PS3 if the television has corresponding color-coded red, white and yellow jacks. If the television has a jack labeled "S-Video," it will provide slightly superior video if you upgrade the cable to an S-Video cable. The PS3 version of this cable substitutes an S-Video plug for the yellow video plug that you see on the cable.

Plug one end of the cable into the television following the color coding. Next, plug the other end of the cable into the jack labeled "AV Multi-Out" on the PS3. It's next to the power input connector.

Turn the television on and toggle through the "Input" settings by pressing the "Input" or "Source" button on the remote control until the PS3 image appears on the screen.

    • 4

Turn the PS3 off and then on again if the image doesn't appear on the screen, then repeat the Step 3 and the image will appear on the television screen.
