How to Delete PS3 Game Installation Files

All versions of the PlayStation 3 include a hard drive, from the launch model released in 2006 to the most recent models released today. The hard drive is used for a variety of reasons, such as installing data for disc-based games. Many disc-based games, such as "Marvel Vs Capcom 3," must have data installed on the hard drive prior to playing. Installing the data reduces the amount of loading the game must do, resulting in faster load times and less waiting to begin the game. The install sizes vary from 1 to 12 gigabytes and can quickly consume a large amount of space. It is possible to delete the installation files of games that you don't play anymore.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the "Game" tab from the PlayStation 3's main menu.

    • 2

Select "Game Data Utility." A list of each game's installation files, patch files and downloadable content files are displayed in alphabetical order.

    • 3

Press the "Triangle" button on your PlayStation 3 controller on any game file and select "Information." Installation files are not labeled as such and the only way to recognize them is by the size of the file. Any file over 1 GB is an installation file. For example, "Marvel Vs Capcom 3's" installation file is 1.4 GB.

    • 4

Press "Circle" to exit back to the game file.

    • 5

Press "Triangle" to access the game file's menu again and select "Delete." The installation file is deleted.
