How to Remove CFW from a PS3

When custom firmware (CFW) is installed onto a device, it means firmware other than the proprietary firmware for that device is being used. In the case of the PlayStation 3 (PS3), firmware other than what Sony installed on the PS3 is considered custom firmware. While it is legal to install it on your device, however you do lose features when a new official firmware is available. Removing the custom firmware can be done by installing official firmware directly over it.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the "Settings" heading on the PS3 menu and select "System Update" from the top of the sub-menu that comes up.

    • 2

Select "Update via Internet" on the next menu that comes up. Select the "Download" option on the next screen, and the PS3 downloads the new firmware.

    • 3

Press the "X" button when the menu asks you to. This installs the new firmware update. During the procedure the PS3 may turn off. Do not turn it back on, because this is part of the firmware upgrade.

    • 4

Select the "Settings" heading again when the PS3 turns back on. Select the "System Settings" sub-heading.

    • 5

Check the "Current Firmware" version. It will read the new firmware you just installed. As of July, 2011, the most current firmware is 3.66.
