How to Make the Audio Work on a PS3

The Sony PlayStation 3 game console features three separate audio connection options, designed to work with a wide range of A/V receivers and televisions on the consumer market. The HDMI output connection option includes support for

Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD and 2-channel PCM digital sound formats. The digital optical output supports two-channel and 5.1 digital audio, while the supplied SCART A/V cable connections provide basic two-channel analog audio. Enabling and configuring the audio settings for your PS3 is an easy task that only takes a few minutes to complete.

Instructions

  1. Cable Connections

    • 1

Examine the audio input connection options for your television or A/V receiver. Determine the best audio connection for your particular application.

    • 2

Consider using an available HDMI input connection or digital optical connection on the A/V receiver or television for the best audio quality. Use the standard "red" and "white" SCART connectors if your television or A/V receiver lacks any available HDMI ports or digital optical inputs.

    • 3

Connect the desired cable from the PS3 to the corresponding "INPUT" on the television or A/V receiver. The HDMI cable interface carries both audio and video signals, eliminating the need for the supplied composite SCART or optional component video cable.

    Audio Configuration

    • 4

Turn on the television and PS3 game console. Turn on the connected A/V receiver and select the appropriate input source, if applicable.

    • 5

Navigate to the "Settings" menu and choose the "Sound Settings" option.

    • 6

Highlight the "Audio Output Settings" and press the "X" button on the controller.

    • 7

Highlight the appropriate sound connection type from the options listed and press the "X" button.

    • 8

Place a check next to each supported sound field; refer to the documentation supplied with your television or audio receiver to determine the appropriate formats. Depending upon the connection type, certain sound formats may not be selectable.

    • 9

Save the audio settings after selecting the supported sound formats from the list. Exit the settings menu to complete the setup process.
