How to Replace the Yellow Laser Light on the PS3

The PS3 gaming console comes with an integrated Blu-Ray DVD player. Like most other disc-drives it uses a laser light to read the disc. If you are not getting a picture when you try to play a game or DVD in the drive, it could be the result of a bad laser. If you aren't intimidated by electronics projects, you can replace the laser lens yourself by opening up the PS3 console.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the PS3 from the wall outlet. Unplug the controllers from the front of the device as well as the cables from the back of the device.

Locate the rubber pad on the top of the left side of the console. Use the tip of a screwdriver to pop the pad off to reveal a screw underneath.

    • 4

Slide the top of the console case to the left and remove it from the unit. This will reveal a metal top panel underneath.

Lift the top of the drive assembly off to expose the drive mechanisms inside, including the circular lens.

    • 9

Remove all the screws that circle the lens assembly. Remove the lens assembly and set it aside.

    • 10

Fit a new lens in the drive and replace the screws.

    • 11

Replace the top case of the drive and the screws. Plug the cables back into the drive and fit the drive into the console.
