How to Connect the Yellow Dog PS3 to a Network

Yellow Dog offers a Linux-based alternative to your PlayStation 3's operating system, but the Yellow Dog OS Wi-Fi connection is a bit more difficult to set up than the original PS3 Wi-Fi. Before dealing with your Wi-Fi connection, you'll need to update the GameOS component to ensure you've got the latest firmware. Eth0, the Internet component of Yellow Dog, only allows for either a wireless or wired Internet connection; you can't have both at the same time.

Instructions

  1. Updating GameOS

    • 1

Click the Yellow Dog symbol on your PS3's task bar and choose "System" and "Log out." Click the "Shutdown" option within the login menu. Press the PlayStation 3 power button for five seconds or until you hear two beeps.

    • 2

Navigate to "System," "System update" and "Update Via Internet." Follow the on-screen instructions to update GameOS.

    • 3

Navigate to "Settings," "System Settings" and "Default System," choosing "OtherOS" from the options by clicking "X." When prompted, confirm that you'd like to "start the other system now" by choosing "Yes."

    Setting Up Wi-Fi

    • 4

Log into Yellow Dog and unplug any wired network connections to your PS3. Click the Yellow Dog symbol and choose "Applications," "Applications," "System Tools," "System Config" and "Network." When prompted, enter your root password.

    • 5

Navigate to the "Hardware" tab, choose "Sony PS3 Ethernet Dev" and "Delete." Click "Yes" twice to confirm that you want to delete.

    • 6

Move to the "Devices" tab and choose "Deactivate." Select "New," "Wireless Connection," "Forward" and "Sony PS3 Ethernet Device (eth0)." Press "Forward" and choose the "Auto" option. Enter your network's encryption key into the box labeled "Key." If there is no password, leave the "Key" box blank.

    • 7

Choose "Forward" twice, then "Apply," "Activate," "Yes" and "Ok." Test your connection to make sure you've connected it properly.
