How to Connect a Webcam to a PS3

Webcams are cameras that connect to an electronic device and process live video footage. You can use them to take pictures, record movies and video-conference with others over the internet. Gaming systems such as the PlayStation 3 have adapted webcam technology to enhance the gaming experience, producing games that are controlled by visual cues such as "EyeCreate" or "Tori-Emaki." However, in order to take advantage of this feature you must purchase a proprietary webcam designed to work with the PS3, the PlayStation Eye.

  Turn off the PlayStation if it is on. Hold the "Start" button in the center of the controller for five seconds. Select "Turn off System" when prompted.

  Plug the Eye into one of the available USB ports on the system. Make sure that the USB plug is rotated so that the three-pronged USB symbol faces upward, otherwise the plug will not fit in the port.

  Press the power button to turn the PS3 on. Use the joystick to scroll up and down. Highlight your user name. Press X."

  Insert the disc for an Eye-compatible game such as "Eye Pet."

  Nudge the joystick to the left to reach the "Game" symbol on the main menu; the symbol resembles a controller. Scroll down and select the "Disc" icon, labeled "Eye Pet." Press "X" to launch the game.
