What is the Difference Between PlayStation 3 Backwards Capability & No Capability?

There are only three PlayStation 3 models that are fully backward compatible with previous generation PlayStation games. When someone calls a PlayStation 3 backward compatible, he is usually referring to its ability to play PlayStation 2 games. A PlayStation 3 that is referred to has having no backward compatibility can still play PlayStation 1 games because all models are backward compatible with PlayStation 1 games. Some PlayStation 3 models support software backward compatibility while others actually integrate PlayStation 2 hardware for backward compatibility.
  1. Backward Compatible Models

    • The three fully backward compatible PlayStation 3 models were released early in the systems life cycle. The two launch models that were sold between November 2006 and November 2007, referred to as the 20 GB and 60 GB models because of their hard drive sizes, feature built-in PlayStation 2 hardware that allows them to be fully backward compatible with PlayStation 2 games. However, this feature was dropped when Sony released the 40 GB model, which debuted at a lower price in November 2007.

Every other version of the PlayStation 3 released after November 2007 excludes the PlayStation 2 game support feature with the exception of the limited release CECHE01 model, which is commonly referred to as the "Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundle" model or "Backwards Compatible 80GB" model because it was sold in a package that included the game Metal Gear Solid 4. This model uses software emulation to play PlayStation 2 games and is not the only version to carry an 80 GB hard drive, This version has problems playing some PlayStation 2 games. The other 80 GB model only has two USB ports on the front instead of four, and can not play PlayStation 2 games.

    Models in Production

    • Sony redesigned the PlayStation 3 in the fall of 2009 and sells models with 120 GB, 250 GB and 320 GB hard drives. These three different hard drive size systems feature minor changes between models but do not feature backward compatibility with PlayStation 2 games. Unless a retailer has leftover models of the backward compatible versions, you are unable to purchase a new console with the feature.

    Future Backward Compatibility

    • According to 1up.com, Sony has patented a backward compatibility add-on for the PlayStation 3 as of the fall of 2010. The device has not been released as of the summer of 2011; however, if Sony does release the device, it will be able to make PlayStation 3 models with no backward compatibility capability able to play PlayStation 2 games.

    Limited Compatibility

    • The backward compatible 80 GB PlayStation 3 model has limited backward compatibility because it runs a software emulation program. The system is able to play the majority of games without a problem, but some games don't run correctly or at all on the system. Sony offers an online list of backward compatible games for both types of backward compatible PlayStation 3s.
