The Easy Way to Hook Up My PS3 with an HDMI Cable

A high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) cable carries both audio and video. If your television is compatible with HDMI, it's an easy way to hook up your PlayStation 3 to the display because you only have to deal with one cable rather than as many as three, as is the case with standard definition cables. HDMI cables offer the advantage of providing a high-quality signal, and they are intelligent in the sense that they can tell whether a signal is being transmitted, turning themselves on if there is, and off if there is not.

Instructions

Plug the HDMI cable into the jack labeled "HDMI Out" on the Sony PS3. It's the second plug from the left and is to the right of the Ethernet port. Plug the other end of the cable into an HDMI port on the television. Many televisions have more than one port. Remember which one you use: "HDMI 1," "HDMI 2" and so on.

Turn both devices on and enter the "Settings" area of the PS3. Then choose "Display Settings" and subsequently "Video Output Settings." Then press the button marked "X." Select "HDMI" as the type of cable to be used for the video and audio out. Press the forward arrow to see the selection and confirm it with the "X." Do exactly the same for the "Sound Settings."

Press the button labeled "Input" or "Source" on the television to choose between inputs until the HDMI port you chose appears. The PS3 video output will show on the screen and the audio will be transmitted through the television's speakers.
