Instructions
Download the PS3 custom firmware from either the developer's website or from a download mirror.
Insert the USB flash drive into the computer's USB port and click the "New folder" option. Enter in "PS3" as the folder name. Open the "PS3" folder.
Click the "New folder" button again to create an "UPDATE" folder inside the previously created "PS3" folder. Save the custom firmware file, which is named "PS3UPDAT.PUP," into the "UPDATE" folder.
Unplug the USB flash drive from the computer and insert it into the PS3's USB port. Hold the "Power" button on the PS3 to turn it off.
Hold the "Power" button on the PS3 until you hear three beeps. The PS3 turns on and turns off again. Hold the "Power" again until you hear three beeps. The last beep is a "double beep" and verifies that you are in "Safe Mode."
Connect your PS3 controller to your PS3 with the USB cable and press the button in the middle of the controller with the "PS" logo on it.
Select option "6. System Update" from the "Safe Mode" menu that comes up. The PS3 locates the custom firmware file on the USB flash drive.
Press the "Accept" option when asked and the custom firmware is installed onto the PS3. The PS3 reboots. Select the resolution of your TV monitor when asked. The PS3 powers back on and the softmod is complete.
